Museums have always had an amazing ability to take you to places that you have never been and to time periods many centuries before you were even born, without moving an inch.

Admit it, museums are perhaps the closest you can get to time travel. That is, until a time travel machine has been invented.

From prehistoric tools to ancient inscriptions, from sculptures belonging to the Vedic period to Mughal armour, and from the first radio to the planes used during the World Wars, museums have it all.

Commemorating the plethora of knowledge that a museum lends and the fascination that follows it, every year on May 18, International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated worldwide.

Conceptualised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, every year a theme is set and museums across the world organise various events and activities pertaining to it. The objective of having a special day dedicated to museums is to promote the role of these institutions in contemporary times.

And the museums of Bengaluru aren’t anywhere behind.

Beginning on May 18 and spread across four days, the State Archaeological Museum, Bengaluru (also known as the Government Museum) in the city will play host to various interactive, educational and engaging activities for both adults and children.

Conceptualised by ReReeti, a Bengaluru-based organisation that aims to revitalise museums and enable them to connect better with visitors, the event is funded by Karnataka Tourism board and will host a plethora of events.

“Starting from a mobile treasure hunt for adults to story writing workshops for kids by authors Andaleeb Wajid and Aparna Raman, there will also be storytelling sessions by Vikram Sridhar and Shreya Biswas,” says Tejshvi Jain, founder and director of ReReeti.

The theme for this year is “Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the Unspeakable in Museums”.

“All the workshops have been carefully curated in consideration of the theme, with an aim to bring about greater empathy, foster understanding of various communities and approach subjects from multiple points of view,” she says.

Two years since its inception, ReReeti has also been facilitating workshops for museum professionals and curates experiences that help museums showcase their brilliant collections in creative ways. “We also work with schools in creating educational modules highlighting museum collections and works with families to create fun experiences at museums”, Tejshvi adds.
